Some people do make private entries only, that only they can see. It's a rather more secure place, only viewable with a password, than sticking your diary under your mattress where your little brother can find it.

In my personal experience, LJ is used for me to keep in touch with my online friends. If I have an awesome day, I can write about it there, where they can all go read it in their own time and comment, rather than for me to have to go tell them all individually.

I've spent the last 4.5 months in Japan, and LJ has be great. I have lots of friends/parents/relatives that want to know what goes on, and what I did on my trip, etc. This way, I can type it all once, and if someone really wants to know, they can go read it. YI've also linked to my pictures from my livejournal, so people can get to those easily. It works really well for that purpose.

Also, I like the though of keeping a journal, but was never very good with sitting down and writing. For me, this is a more technological (and therefore more appealing) way for me to keep a record of what I've done so I can read it 5 or 10 years on down the road. There are also communities for Neopets users. I'm in one called ljneopets. :)

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't use LJ. I think I lasted for a whole hour before I got completely bored with it. I guess interactive internet journals just aren't for everyone.

Exactly. If you have friends who you don't see online often due to time differences, and you want to tell them something, you can make an entry. Or you can make one entry rather than tell ten people.

Or you can be like me and count stairs and tell everyone else how many there are, just in case they ever need to know. ;)

(Speaking of which... ::skips off to do a new entry:: )

Take the easy way out...find a friend who can customise it for you. XD

Friends only icons - basically, when people have a friends only journal, they put that picture in so others know, and can comment to ask to be added.

Btw, if anyone wants some new livejournal friends, my username is juurii (livejournal, and neo). If you add me, I'll add you back. I'm always up for making new friends. :)
