I was wondering what imaginary numbers are. None of my classes in high school or college ever got around to teaching what they are. I looked it up in the dictionary but it just said "A complex number in which the imaginary part is not zero". Can someone explain this to me?

Wow thanks. That explained it more simply than I thought. It was very helpful.
