Can anyone tell me whether the def stat will help u receive less damage if

1)You are not using any shield or percentage defense items...

2)You are using a shield but it is unable to block any icons that ur opponent uses...(eg. portable kiln against ghostkershield)

No on both counts. You've got to be using an item that defends against something they're attacking you with in order to block it. :)
