Yeah ive been suporting poverty, for about 3 years now.And i dont think it has anything to do with fashionable. If you think it is fashionable, fine that is your opinion. But too me, Make Poverty History should happen, cause if we say its out of fashion, millions of people will die in Africa. Now im not talking about the orgainzation, but the actually thought.

Don't worry, Nick's just messing with you. He's like that with all of us. Anyway, what I think he's trying to highlight is the fact that everyone was supporting it during the first half of the year because of the build up to G8 and Bono was getting all of these celebrities to join in and wear the bands. Now that the celebrities aren't wearing their bands now, people just don't think about it anymore. I still wear my band because I know that it's ot just an issue that can be thrown aside, but I must say that I'm probably only one in about 40 other people in Scotland who are still wearing it.

I'll just say this before the deafening roar of high horses takes over, but no one needs to tell me about poverty. I grew up next door to it, what with being african and everything, and I saw it every day. There's nothing wrong with being active in wanting to help stamp out poverty ( even with the knowledge that it takes a bit more than £1.50 bracelet to cause the radical reshuffling of governmental systems in africa, and a change in policy in the first world) I'm all for anyone trying to help. What annoys me is people hopping up like they just discovered poverty and that somehow they've elevated themselves above everyone else morally.

Seriously though, if you are serious about stopping poverty, spent the next 35 years becoming the head of a global business empire worth £700 million and then use your considerable financial and polictical influence to change the governments attitude. Or maybe even buy a whole african country and fix it. Imagine that, you could say "I fixed ethiopia." Great eh. Thing is, after spending 40 years working, it seems like a lot of business people aren't so interested in africa, and they are the ones who need to be.

Charity cant fix Africa. More often than not any aid sent over will be appropriated by whichever militia gets to it first. You can include the African "Government" under the heading of Militia. The argument that some gets through isnt good enough to my mind if the rest goes to help fund the very problems you are trying to solve.

Big Business cant ( wont ) help Africa. Setting up a factory and doing business in Africa costs more than it does to set one up in the US, and with far greater risk. Africa has some of the highest relative Tax Rates in the world. Guns are expensive afterall. Not expensive enough, but still expensive.

Only Africa can help Africa. And Africa doesnt want to.

Please dont think while reading this that I dont sympathise with Africa and its people. Because infact I very much do. The simple fact is that Africa is a self-destructive nation, and all the 2 pounds a month in the world wont change that. I'd much rather try and fix something that can be fixed.

That'll only happen if a powerful country liberates Africa from the corrupt Government. Which, after the struggles of other countries recently, isn't going to really happen.

That isn't true, Jim. I doubt people enjoy living in poverty. Its the "higher powers" that don't want to help.

Not meaning to start a debate or anything. But I believe if you say "Country A is going to give aid to Country B", you actually mean the government of Country A is going to give money to Country B.

Only (the) Africa(n Government) can help Africa. And (the) Africa(n Government) doesn't want to.

Africa's not a nation. Many of the governments of the nations within Africa are corrupt and unwilling to help their citizens.

It's a very sad reality, but I have to agree with some of what's said here. Charity is not the solution. The people of Africa have to learn to help themselves. It sounds cold hearted to say these things, but it's true. I actually find pure charity to be sort of insulting. "Those poor people don't know any better so let's just spoon feed them since they can't learn to support themselves." There's no good answer to this problem and my heart does go out to citizens of different African nations who are suffering, disenfranchised, and starving.

At the same time, my heart also goes out to the people of my nation (and other nations all over the world) who are suffering, disenfranchised and starving.
