I would have guessed just left of center using 2 of the 3 red stars in a row.

Thats not it, it's off center and the two parts are too far away.

If you follow the loft side of your sleeper us, you'll see three red stars. THe first two are two of the first to rise stars.

I think it's plenty hard. This isn't supposed to be neurosurgery and they have to make the plot playable for young and old. Think how hard it is if you don't use any sort of program to find your constellation and just click around using your telescope. The LDP wasn't insanely hard either, just tedious, and you need to pay attention to details.
