How Important is Service Pack 2?

#1 Post by Susannahmio »

I have always installed full updates on my PC but am now having a conflict with SP2 and my mp3 player.

If I install the mp3 player before installing sp2 it will work great, once I install sp2 it keeps telling me my device has malfunctioned. If I plug the player into a rear usb port it will pick it up but lock the computer so that I can't do anything untill I unhook the player. I have also tried not installing the player at all untill sp2 is installed, that doesn't work either.

I have formatted my computer several times to try and find a workaround but the only exlpanatin I can come up with is a conflict with sp2. I have also read a few other people have had this problem on the net.

So can I live without sp2? and what can I download to fix the things that I can't live without?
Thanks!

You're supposed to install SP2 first after reformatting before you install any other programs on there to avoid conflicts.

I never updated to SP2. I have read too many stories of the pain it causes.

You should be fine if you surf smart (and use firefox :)).
Since these are no longer temporary forums, I will update my signature.

That's only from morons who installed it after installing all of their other softwares. If you install it after installing Windows, you're fine. I have not had a problem.

Have you checked if the mp3 players software has a fix for sp2 on their website.

When things go wrong, best thing to do is to go to the manufacturer, most companies have sorted out SP2 incompatibilities by now.

I have downloaded the latest drivers and updated the firmware and still have the problem. I have installed Norton Antivirus and zonealarm pro now to protect me from the evil internet. I think i'll be ok!
